Kathy Kastner

Class of 2024

Kathy's time with WSC began in 2000 when her oldest son Mike decided to play travel soccer.
During those first few years, Kathy managed her son’s team, The Windsor Raptors, and
volunteered to work on the Columbus Day Tournament as the T-shirt coordinator, which back
then, meant ordering and sorting (by team) the CDT commemorative t-shirts. In 2003, Kathy’s
younger son Dan joined the travel program, so of course she signed up to manage his team,
The Windsor Rage.

In 2002 Kathy joined the Board of Directors as the Club Registrar. During that time,
she became the Assistant Tournament Director under Windsor Soccer Hall of Fame member
Mark Lacafta. Kathy was part of the group that not only brought in the largest number of teams
to ever participate in a Windsor Soccer tournament, but also raised the most money of any
tournament to that point. In 2010 Kathy became the Tournament Director for the 25th
anniversary of the CDT while still managing the Windsor Rage. Kathy's tenure as Tournament
Director continued in 2011 and in the spring of 2012, with both her kids having aged out of the
club, she decided was time to retire. Or was it? In 2015,with her now step-son Sebastian
joining travel soccer, Kathy came back for 2 more years as Tournament Director. Clubs across
CT, MA and NY began hosting their own Columbus Day Tournaments, making it increasingly
difficult to recruit teams to attend Windsor's tournament. All the “regulars” were now looking for
different tournaments and experiences so in the fall of 2016, the WSC Columbus Day
Tournament came to an end.
Over the course of a dozen years, Kathy dedicated her time and efforts to the WSC and truly
believes those were some of the best years of her life. The friendships she made all those years
ago continue to this day. “I love the WSC and will always be grateful I had those years with my
kids and for the wonderful friends I made and the people I met and worked with across the
years.”

Jim Cardillo

Class of 2024

Jim began his time with the club in 1984 as a co-coach of the U-10 Girls travel team with Roger Hosig (Class of 2019).
He was one of the founders of the Columbus Day Tournament. Like everyone on those early committees, he served in several positions over the years. He refereed for many years, both in the CDT and during the regular season. Jim represented the club at CJSA district level meetings, coached the girls district select team and served two years as CJSA vice president for girl’s programs. During that time, he helped bring several men’s and women’s national team games to Connecticut. While still coaching for the club, Jim also spent two years as the freshman girls’ soccer coach and two years
as assistant girls’ varsity coach at Windsor High School.

Mike Orth

Class of 2020

Mike and his family moved to Windsor in 1986.  In the fall of 1987 Mike became the assistant coach for his daughters U10 team, the Flames. Later, Mike would become the Girls' Director in the Fall of 1990 and later President in 1992,  a role he held for approximately ten years. In this time he continued to coach in the girls program and worked with the board to continue to grow the annual Columbus Day Soccer Tournament. His wife Deb, filled the position of Club Secretary for those ten years as well and was a great help to him and the club until he resigned in 2002.

Russ Wenner: Class of 2020

Russ Wenner

Class of 2020

Russ Wenner held various positions with the soccer club for 16 seasons between 1993 – 2009. He coached all four of his children  in the program throughout the years, at both the earliest ages of the recreational program and onto the Travel years. Russ was actively involved with the annual Columbus Day Tournament and was both the Director of the Boys and the Girls Programs for the final 10 years. He played an enormous role in the development stages of the program, beginning with stressing technical skill development at the younger ages and adding in more tactical means as they matured. He prided himself on keeping the game progressive and challenging for the players, while still maintaining a fun and enjoyable environment.

Tom Krikawa: Class of 2019

Class of 2019

Tom Krikawa

Held a number of positions different positions in his time with the club, including Director of the Girls Travel Program, Treasurer, and Registrar. He was a masterful club recruiter, avidly lobbying community support for its initiatives.

What Tom most enjoyed with his time with the club was coaching. He valued supporting each player and building on her/his strengths as an Assistant/Co-coach of his childrens teams, the Firecrackers and the Blazers. Tom had a calm, analytic approach to problem-solving and focused primarily on the players’ development and contributions to the team that resulted in a positive impact on all the children.

Sadly, we lost Tom to brain cancer in August 2007.  The Columbus Day Tournament was dedicated to Tom that year.

Mark Lacafta: Class of 2019

Class of 2019

Mark Lacafta

Between 1999 and 2016, Mark coached a combination of 15 division championship and tournament championship teams with the Windsor Red Storm, the Windsor Bulldogs and the Windsor Wolverines, making him likely the winningest coach in WSC history.
