Travel Referee Program

HOW DO I BECOME A USYSA (US Youth Soccer Association) CERTIFIED REFEREE?
It’s easy! Sign up and attend a course and take a certification test. Courses are announced on the CJSA web site (http://www.cjsa.net then hit the USSF Referee link) and are usually held in the January through May timeframe. The fee for the course is $50.00. Windsor Soccer Club has set aside funds for reimbursement of some or all of this fee.

Classes are approximately 2 1/2 hours each. There are seven classes. Attendance at all classes and a passing grade on the exam are required for certification. The recommended minimum age is 13, but a very mature 12 year old probably can be successful. Adults are encouraged to attend.

HOW MUCH MONEY CAN I MAKE?
You can expect to make between $15 - $20 as a linesman for each of your first 12 games for a mere one and one half-hours of work!! After twelve games, you may be able to center, and can expect to make between $20 - $30 per game. This is an ideal part time job for those kids and adults who want extra spending money and the ability to pick their own hours.

Game Age Center Line
U14 $30 $20
U13 $30 $20
U12 $30 $20
U11 $30 $20
U10 $25 $18
U9 $25 $18

WHEN WILL I WORK?
Currently, there is a shortage of referees in our district. There are more than enough opportunities to referee. You can choose those games that fit your schedule for any weekend. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays.

WHERE WILL I WORK?
You will usually referee in the town that you live in. For Windsor, that includes Northwest Park and occasionally other sites within town. There are also ample opportunities to referee in neighboring towns. You can also referee at any tournament.

SELECTION FOR GAMES
As a referee, you have an important job - one that every team is grateful for when game time comes. Referees are assigned based on their age and experience. If you center a game, you will be at least two years older than the team age (i.e. a U-10 team will have referees at least 12 years old) for all games U-14 and under.

REFEREE RECERTIFICATION CLINICS
Each year you will need to recertify. This involves attending a three hour course. These courses are announced on the CJSA web site (http://www.cjsa.net then hit the USSF Referee link) and are usually held in the fall/winter/spring timeframe.

ASSIGNMENT AND CANCELLATION PROCEDURES

Assigning Games
The Windsor Soccer Club’s Referee Assigner will begin to arrange for referees on Monday night preceding the weekend matches.   The Assigner will call you to see if you are able to take games for the coming weekend.

Referee Cancellation Policy

  1. The team coach, manager or other designated individual must call the Referee Assigner at least two days, and before 5 PM, in advance of a canceled match for non-weather related issues.
  2. Teams will make every effort to play games, even in poor weather conditions.  If weather conditions are severe (i.e. would affect the safety of the players or the conditions of the field), the cancellation of any match must follow the following guidelines:  (a) the coach must directly contact the referees assigned to their game as soon as the decision is made to cancel.  If a referee is contacted the referee will not be compensated for this game. If the referees cannot be reached and arrive at the field, they will be paid ½ of their fee.
If both teams are present at the field, the Referee has the final say on whether the game is canceled.  Anytime after the game is started, the referees will be paid in full.  The Manager of the team (or an alternate representative) must pay the referees at that time.
