No formal training is required.  However, one needs to be very knowledgeable about soccer and must attend a 4-hour referee orientation, which is usually held at the beginning of the fall season.

This is a 4-hour training session conducted by the chief referee.  The session comprises of an overview of the soccer rules, proper referee field positioning and hands-on field training in the form of a scrimmage.  The classroom session is approximately 2 ½ hours and the field training is approximately 1-½ hours.

After the training, each referee will receive a T-shirt, a whistle, and a red & yellow card kit, which includes a game record paper.
